Yes on sound, yes on performance.

The X pipe will balance out the pressure on both banks of the engine causing it to scavenge (suck out the exhaust gas) better, and it will take away some of the popping, and from what i have read, it changes the sound slightly

Yes, performance will increase with better scavenging, the sound will too.

in the 350ish horsepower range does an H pipe or cross over do just about as good? on true duals?

I lost low end torque with my long tubes, duals and xpipe. trust in a 3" y pipe and single 3" out. It sounded like a pissed vette though.

I would always run an x pipe with dual exhaust. My experience was with 2.5" duals without and X, it lost seat of the pants torque compared to stock. The X will smooth out and possibly knock down the sound level.

I put an x-pipe on my truck and it sounds like the exhaust is fighting to get out. I believe it would add performance if the pipe up to that point on both sides were even length. I have the driver side crossing over and the passenger side going straight back (4 foot of pipe from header to x pipe on the driver side, and the passenger is like 2 foot), and I think the exhaust flow isn't working right. I'm looking to take it off.

You make up the lost low end at the top plus more. My truck pulls high on dyno runs compared to other trucks with Y set ups.
