Default wierd "low coolant" message

ok i'm dumbfounded by the problem so i turn to you guys.

every now and then when sitting in stop and go traffic i will get a "low coolant" message. my temps never go anywhere when it happens, the truck runs the same as before, there is no difference at all in driveability. by the time i can get pulled over, kill the truck, and pop the hood, the reservoir has plenty of coolant in it. but its so erratic that it doesn't do it all the time when i'm in traffic, just sometimes. and usually once i kill the truck and start it back up the message goes away.

i've checked it several times for leaks and so far as i can tell there isn't a leak anywhere. not even the waterpump gasket problem that i've read about. last time i added some coolant just to be on the safe side and it appears as though i haven't lost any of it. but still the message comes on so maybe i'm losing it slowly enough to trigger that sensor.

next i figure maybe bad head gaskets and i check the oil. after 3500 miles of this erratic problem my oil is BEAUTIFUL. definately no water in it.

so where is my coolant going? i would think if it was getting into the cylinder the truck would run like **** but it runs fine. even under WOT with the message on. or could it be some kind of sensor problem?

If you're not losing any coolant, the sensor or the wiring to it may be at fault?

Yup the same happened to me . It would come on once in a while when I'd pull over and check it out I found no leaks or problems. I just added a little water when the truck was at normal temps and it has not happened since.

I just went through that with my wife's 02 grand prix. The low coolant light came on this morning while on the freeway. I got to our shop and turned off the car and then back on and the light was gone. I checked the reservoir and it "looked" good. Well it wasnt full at all, it was stained and was damn near empty. So I let it cool off for a while and pull the radiator cap and it was full too. FULL OF OIL.......I checked the oil dipstick and it looks fine. The car has 82k miles. I was like WTF? It runs fine...no SES light....The dealer is checking it out in the morning. I have 100k mile warranty on it so we will see............Good luck with yours

Ye, mine started doing this around the eleventeenth cam swap. But it doesnt do it anymore. Id just add a little more. I guess its possible that when you kill it, maybe the resevoir sucks a little in there. Or maybe the radiator isnt quite full. Hell I dont know, Id just add a little and see what happens.

Or you could try th efix all, and just wait for the 6l. That fixes all the problems (well except for the transmission problems )

I would try completely draining the fluids and slowly filling it up with new fluid. As impossible as it may be, you could have air trapped someplace. If, not the new fluids and just filling it up would work. Have you tried squeezing your hoses and checking stuff like that? We'll figure it out.

my truck has been doin this for over a year now, but I havent noticed any problems. Even after my water pump went... and I flushed and replaced everything, that light still pops up every now and then. Maybe ill try addling a little more fluid to it and see what happens.
