Default Why does everyone bash shorties?

I know I am stirring up a hornets nest here. However, does anyone have any dyno proof that the long tubes make twice as much as the shorties? What would be the gains with shorties, mids, or long tubes? I would like to know because I am considering a purchase of headers, after a muffler.

I know for a fact mid length headers and long tube headers produce 20rwhp and 20-25rwtq. There are a few here that have dyno runs to prove it. The advantages of long tubes over mid lengths are more apparent when you are producing a lot of hp/tq. ie, heads, cam, forced induction, juice, and so on. Shortys IMO are just for looks and sound. From what I have read here, they only give about 5rwhp 5rwtq, if that.
So to answer your question, the long tube/ midlength headers actually make more than twice the power of shortys. More like 4 times.
BigTex got 20rwhp/20rwtq out of his Hamm midlengths, and I think Oxidizr got about the same #'s from his AS&M. Both are very well know on this site for there knowledge about these trucks.

I got 20/20 from my Hamm headers.

i don't have a dyno to tell how much horsepower gain but i have track times. i have the edlebrock headers(shorties) y-pipe and i gained about 7 tenths. before i got headers i was running 16 flat. after the headers i ran a 15.3 now don't get me wrong i eventually want long tubes but not until i get my cam. for right now i love the headers, plus they are cheaper than long tubes.

phat, there is no way any exhaust is worth 7/10ths

shorties are ok, i always thought they were worth more like 10hp, they are bolt in and cost less. it is good to have choices

What about JBA headers? I am hoping a least a 15 to 20rwhp gain, from what ever shorties I chose. I think with my heads and cam the headers will really wake it up.

I kinda wonder about 7 tenths also.

PhatChevy:
A stock ext cab 5.3L will run under 16 flat from the factory. Even the 99's I think. With the 3 mods, You should have been running 15.5-15.7 There are way to many variables that could have caused the time differences. Did you ever run it completly stock? If not, did you make more than one pass of 16 flat? I think you just had a bad run, got the headers and had a good run.
If shorties are worth 7/10ths, I should have knocked off a full second with my mid/lengths. (That is supercharger performance.)

Not trying to prove you wrong or stir the pot, just don't want someone new to the game to think they can get 7/10ths off some shorties.

I have the gibson headers and I must say HP gains seem to be minimal, mostly a little mose noise and Hp up in the high RPM range, Also I noticed that the manifolds that come off these trucks aren't so bad they actualy have 4 outlets not like the older trucks that have the middle two clumped toghether, maybe I'm wrong but perhaps this leads to less improvement.
