Default When to upgrade The 4l60E??

Ive been talking to some people on this site but I want to know what most of you think! A large amount of us have the 4l60 tranny and obvioulsy are adding more power each day. That being said when do you think it is the right time to upgrade to the 4l65 or 4l680 and which one would you upgrade to? Ive been hearing so many different scenarios and numbers I had to ask. If there are certain mods you think need the upgrade or if there is a certain number of HP and TQ you think please share.

It really dependant on what kind of power you are expecting to put out. An FLP 4L65 is supposed to be good for 450-500 rwhp. The 4L80 is good for quite a bit more with just a shift kit. The 80 requires a new x member and new flywheel I think along with new harness. I havent decided which way I'll go. The FLP is like 2500 and requires core . I may go with an 80 since it ultimately holds more, but I'll have to get a new stall .

if you can find an 80 for a good price then get it, a 4l65 is a good tranny but can't compare to an 80 if its built right...

If i ever have to replace my transmission(keeping finger crossed but not holding my breath) I will just opt and go for the 80. You will also ned to change out the rear gears becasue the 1st gear in these is really high. Go with either 4:10 or 4:56 if you want the performance. If your making anywhere over 450 hp it's just a matter of time bfore it goes. I am hopping someone will come out with a conversion package for the 80 for our trucks and will cut down on the fabing up of all new parts.

i think you should upgrade the 4L60E when you buy it. a stock trans is just something you haven't gotten around to yet.

I would go with the 4L65e or the 4L85E. I work at a local chevrolet dealership in the service department & have seen it all. My father has the 4L65E in his 03 Silverado SS, it has about 19k on it & we have installed an ati procharger with 11psi of boost, custom grind comp cam, headers, true duals, tci 2800 stall convertor, oversized billet servos. after we installed the supercharger we had a problem with transmission shift adapts & shift time. I was very dissapointed to see that the 4L65E had the same size servos as my 4L60E. Changing out the servos with the oversized ones(larger thatn the corvettes) help it out alot. On our first trip out to the track with richard (99silveradoss) it ran a 13.20 @ 98mph with a 1.702 60ft on a 5400lb truck. we had a problem with the tuning though & it was shifting into overdrive & going into tcc lockup after 2nd gear. Not sure why it started that but it started right after we installed the stall, ls1 edit fixed that though. The transmission has been beat to death & has not faltered. I on the other hand lost my 4L60E @ 9k with only 285 RWHP, I installed the oversized servos & played with line pressure a little & shattered the 2-4 apply band. I actually drove it for a week like that. When we tore it down there was no distress on the clutches though. We rebuilt it under warranty & installed a stall & disabled tcc lockup during shifts & at wot & so far no problems. Oh yeah I dropped the line pressure a tad too.

OK well Im just gonna bite the bullet! The place that builds the RAPTOR trannies is in my area and Ive talked to them about upgrading. They can take my 4l60e and upgrade it to their E-Raptor Jr that is rated at like 5 or 600 Ive already forgotten. Its gonna be like $1800-1900 installed but I get the billet servos and a new convertor(like a 2800 or can upgrade). Does that seem like a pretty good deal??? This place is suposed to be one of the best tranny places! Does anyone have any feedback on the raptors??? They did a damn good job on my TRansgo and I can use that whe I get the upgrade! So what do you guys think? Check out there site they have some pretty good deals on there. it transmissioncenter.net----sorry if I cant do that!!! Any feedback will be appreciated. I figure Im not gonna go over 500 rwhp so it shoul do!
