Default What size primary tubes?

I'm looking at buying some hooker headers, and they have two size primary tubes. One is 1-5/8" and the other is 1-3/4" primary tubes. I'm thinking the smaller ones will provide better low end torque while the bigger tubes will provide more top end hp. This sound about right? Which size hookers would you go with?

i would go for the 1 5/8" myself. this will keep the exhaust gas velocity up where it needs to be helping you maintain your torque. are the hookers shorties or a long tube? i wished the pacesetters came in the 1 5/8" or at least a stepped 1 5/8" to 1 3/4" variety.

The headers are long tubes. I think they're fairly new, but they come in 1-5/8" and 1-3/4" primary tube sizes.

Cool

chevyerett, you already have a TR224/227 cam and a TCI3500 stall. The stall will get you off the line so you don't really need low end torque. Go for the 1 3/4" primaries and help that engine breath up high to help out that cam. Keep everything working together.

How much are the Hooker Headers running and where can you find them? I'm thinking that Jeg's might have them but I'm not sure.

That's a lot of good info, but still didn't tell me exactly what I wanted to know. Like what happens if the primaries are too big (not enough back pressure). Or some sort of equation to figure out which is best. I may just call hooker.

The ones I'm planning on getting are ~$673, and that's ceramic coated. I'm probably going to get them from Thunder Racing unless I find them elsewhere for cheaper.

I agree 1 3/4.

having primaries that are really too large aren't gonna kill ya, it just won't be the optimum most efficient setup. primaries that are too big will actually cause the exhaust gases through the header to slow down, and reduce the scavenging affect. will you notice a huge difference, dunno. up top it won't make a difference if they are too large, only if they are too small. then it will hurt it up top some. IMO the 1 3/4" primaries will handle anything a 5.3 can throw at them, as far as rpm and volume goes. IMO 1 5/8" primaries would be a more optimal setup for a NA 5.3 that is mainly a street rig and doesn't see over 6K all the time. again JMO.
