What to do with a 305....
#1
I have an '86 Silverado with a 305 (the original motor, with almost 200,000) and was wodering if anybody knew what there is that can be done with the 305 (headers, heads, carb, intake, etc.) other than pulling it out and putting in a 350 or bigger.
Thanks

use it as a boat anchor.
I had an 86 Iroc TPI/305 and wanted to hop it up, but after seeing the cost and work involved , it just made sense to get a 350. might as well get as much displacement as you can, it's worth it. But if ya love the 305 put a cam and heads package on it and some laughing gas.

I agree with the others. Personally, I always thought the 305 engine was too much work for so little power. They came stock with the smallest everything you can think of and were just terrible. Find a 6 liter somewhere and you will be happier. Find either an LQ9 or LS2. Just don't forget to upgrade the transmission while you're at it.

That's what I thought, but I was just curious. I won't be doing anything for quite some time, but when the time comes, I've already been thinking of putting in a healthy 350, but since I'm in college and don't have the money at this time, I'll pretty much run what I have till it gives up. I'm keeping my truck in running order until I reach a point when I can basically rebuild it.

I'm never against modding a healthy 305 and have even done it in my '86 Trans Am TPI 305. I did a Summit Racing cam ('86 was flat tap, not roller, so that was cheap), SLP runners, home ported 416 casting heads with 1.96/1.6 valves cut in, mid length headers with custom single 3" exhaust... and custom programming. I had over 300 rear wheel HP and got 26 MPG interstate. Should have never gotten rid of it.
The problem is if the bottom end isn't healthy and requires a rebuild, it's usually cheaper to buy a 350 block and new internals than it is trying to buy new 305 parts that cost more than the 350 equiv. parts cost.

The only thing that would keep me from putting a 305 back in, or rebuilding, is if I were to restore my truck back to like-new condition, where everything would be like it was when the truck was originally sold. Odds are, I won't be doing that, so a healthy 350 is a highly possible, and realistic, option.

find you a 400 motor and put some double hump heads(62cc) or the vortec heads (64cc) on it and stick it a mild cam and it will pull.. or if you want to go with even higher compression ratio, have your 305 heads (58cc) ported and polished and stick 1.94 or 2.02 valves in them and it will give you a 11.5+ compression..im fixin to build a 377 stroker using a decked 400 block and put 50 cc heads on them
