Sound-wise that is. About a month and a half ago I installed my StainlessWorks LT's w/ catted y-pipe which I bolted up to my old Gibson single in dual out cat back for the time being. By the time I was getting close to done, it was 8:00 pm on Sunday night, and I hadn't re-positioned the tailpipes yet so I said f**k it and just tore em off...ran straight out of the muffler with no pipes. This is only a temporary system anyway, there's a Magnaflow x-pipe, dual Magnaflow 14" long 4" round mufflers, dumped somewhere (can't decide if I want it before or after the axle) in the future.
I gotta say, the sound was perfect for my taste....throaty, fairly loud, very noticable. The only thing I didn't like was that the pass side exhaust exit was dumping right on the pass side shock...I don't see how the constant heat treatment could be a good thing. When I was at an auto parts store today I noticed a rack with a bunch of bends, tailpipes, etc. So I bought two 2 1/2" tailpipes that are about 2 or so feet long (for $13 a piece I said what the heck). At first I was gonna shorten them and dump em before the axle, but the way the Gibson muffler is set up, they'd be dumping pretty much right on the axle. So they worked out to just go straight back and dump about 6" just past the rear axle.
Well, my truck's fairly quiet again. I mean, it's not a whisper, and it's still louder than when I had the shorties and pipes all the way back to the bumper, but it's definitely quieter than with no pipes at all. It sounds decent, but much milder than before...especially at idle. The lack of pipes really brought out what little lope my baby cam had to it (at least I could hear it)...now the cam sounds stock again. Plus, I can hear every squeak and rattle that I had forgotten about, and now I notice some sound from where the SW r/s header is contacting the frame (hope they get that squared away before I do my 6.0 swap). Not to mention the wonderful noises my valvetrain likes to sing.
When I do go for the exhaust upgrade, I'm thinkin that dumping before the axle is gonna be the way to go for me...we'll see...

Oh yea, performance-wise, not sure if I noticed any difference. We had nice crisp air tonight so the truck was running strong when I test drove it. I really doubt if that little bit of pipe would make a big enough difference that I'd notice on the street rollin on 33's, but I'll know as I drive it more.

year ago or so i had my old forceII cat back well over time it roughted. so my one pipe fell off and ijust cut the other one off so i ran just a muffler like you did and it was loud for a 70 series muffler. i then bought a muscle truck side exhaust from flowmaster which as the super 40 1 chamber. at first it was quieter then the dumped 70 but i did gain alot of response i mean alot then of course truck got loud but i still had the more response. personally the pipes help for a DD on a race ride shortest is the best but on a DD you want some lenght for lowend. even tho my pipes are short they are still some what lenghty if you would stretch them out.
