dad wants a CAI for his 06 denali.

I was thinking volant since it has the box around it to keep engine heat away better.

I have a K&N on my truck. Power wise they all seem to be the same. No magical 40+ hp air intakes haha

What do yall think?
eventually he is going to put LT exhaust and get a tune Keep this in mind with the CAI decision

Airaid mit tube, stock box and a good filter.

 

I put on a Volante CAI to my 2002 GMC Sierra about 300 miles ago so I can't really tell you about mpg changes really & didn't expect more than 2 or 3 at absolute best. But it does seems to be marginally better since I was on fumes at 296 miles before & this last tank, first with the CAI, was still reading 1/4 tank at 288 miles. But I can tell you that the hp/torque increase was noticeable which was why I chose Volant in the first place based on all my reading of peoples reports not magazine or manufacturers claims. I don't have the air scoop (yet) since I picked it up used and am still debating on if the air scoop is worth the $100.

If I was staying N/A this is what I would do as well.

do yall just do the air aid for budget or b/c all the gains come from the tube flow and not really cone filter design?

 

For a stock engine, the stock airbox/filter works good. And it pulls air from the gap in the fender that is being fed from the front of the truck beside the headlight. Good design, keeps engine bay heat from getting pulled in.
Now if you had a nice head/cam setup with a intake and big throttle body then yea goin to a 4" or 5" intake tube would help.

 

If you want low IAT's, then a plastic tube intake is the best to go for. They don't act as a brutal heatsoak quite like all the generic metal tube intakes on the market.

The MIT also happens to have a slight-kidney shape to it, unlike the straight through tube designs. This seems to help increase power for most NA engines. Back when I had a Civic, the best intake on the market was affectionately called the "whale *****" because of it's shape. But independent tests proved that it made more power than all the other brands tested.

Same goes for the MIT tube, BBP did an independent test and saw the most gains from the MIT, stock airbox and high flow filter.
