When you weld ss to mild steal, the best way to do it is with a tig and 309 filler rod. 309 filler rod is for welding dissimilar metals such as ss to mild. It works quite well, I just finished doing this on some of the turbo header parts for my dads truck. 308 rod is for ss to ss.

You can use CO2 for the SS, works great. helps cool the puddle as you go. dont do downhand and watch out for the flux breaking off after you lift your helmet, i've had it in the face and near my eyes b4.

CO2 is in both mixes for Mig welding SS.
There is 75/25 mix which is 75% Argon and 25% CO2, thats good for single passes. For best results, you want to use a Tri Mix. Dont quote me on this but I think I'm pretty close to what % is used in Tri Mix. Argon 7.5%, CO2 2.5% and Helium 90%.
Then of course you have staright Argon for Tig welding SS. Which you can also Purge your welds from the insde if you are welding tubing. I am pretty sure you can use Helium or CO2 for more penatration when Tig welding to, thats for structural welding.

I dont know anything about tig, haven't gone for my next welding ticket yet. Just got started in the trade about 3 years ago. it's amazing how much the ss weld shrinks as it coolsruns like water but damn does the bead ever look good.

I love SS welding, especially Tig. Stick is very nice to weld as well, once you get the heat set, you can run a bead like a Tig weld. Very clean

I got lazy one time and welded a stainless 3 inch tube to a steel muffler with a steel mig machine and it's been holding up for 7 years! I just didn;t want to drag out the tig machine...................
