I didn't think it was physically possible to put a 12" clutch in a 9.5" converter body.
That's right a 12" piece will not fit in a 9.5" case. What they do is add additional lockup clutches to the converter. Think of a Suncoast or ATS Duramax's Allison torque converter. They go from a single clutch to a set of three clutches...this VASTLY increases the converters load capacity and allows for converter lockup under insane loads. Think HAULASS when towing with 800rwtq...

Precision Industries has been offering multi clutch lockup conveters for a while. I have seen people that haulass on the 1/4 lockup the converter to squeeze a few more MPH from the runs. I don't see why that converter in a truck wouldn't up the towing capacity.

I mean a twin or triple stacked lockup clutch in a 9.5" converter should, in theory, have more surface area for the lockup than a larger 12-13" single clutch converter, nay?

Why doesn't Yank just go for a triple clutch or are their converter cases not able to accept the additional lockup clutch?

Sorry, I was referring to L-Eaters post about a Midwest 9.5 converter having the single 12" stock size clutch.

Blackblown-I know it is hard to visualize 'cause I didn't get it either until I ordered it and actually layed eyes on it but it is like this: Imagine taking a stock converter and laying it flat on the floor with the side that goes toward the motor down (that is the part where the lockup disks are) OK, now you take a saw and you come up from the floor say about 4" and cut the converter in a plane parallel to the floor. Lift off the top part and set it aside. Do the same thing with a 9.5" converter and set the top half of it on the bottom half of the stocker and weld it back together. That is what the Midwest looks like. The best of both worlds.

That was good! Building a converter is probably much easier than looking at a monitor all day. I wonder how many of us computer guys will have eye problems in 20 years...
