I think the reason your truck spun like hell has more to do with the pathetic tires GM puts on these trucks from the factory. you did say they were stockers right? that means at best you had those sorry *** General's that lasted me about 20k miles. I could burn them into second gear when I drove the truck off the lot. Now when I put on some toyos things changed DRASTICALY. It is important not to confuse lack of traction for added power. Bottom line you may get .1-.2 of a second in the 1320 buy switching from heavy 20's to factory 16's.
How about taking your truck to the track and not using the SOTP meter. the SOTP meter can be quite deceiving!

Actually they're not stockers at all. I meant stock wheels. They're Michelin LTX m/s tires and are very nice. My truck didn't go 500 miles before I threw the stock goodyears away. Time to hook up my $25 G-tech and get some numbers
Now if this damn salt would clean up off the roads I could take my truck out of storage and get some real driving in.

The 20's are gonna handle better and are gonna hook up better obviously. I have a set of the SS 20s and they weigh with tires like 123 lbs more than the stock 16's with tires. Most of the people I run across on the street I can handle with the 20's on so I dont compromise looks to often. If I go to the track to run I put the 16's on everytime. I can tell a little difference in perf with the 20's on the street but the 4.10's help alot plus a little bottle!

That's one of the things about going with bigger wheels/tires. They are heavier and you might loose a little gear also (taller tires). I have some 22s coming in for my Sierra HD. Going from 16-22" is a big difference! It's good to do some performance mods to add about 40+ hp when going with this upgrade. Balances everything out.

I believe it does matter especially when you add weight to your rotating assembly. It would be like adding a 100# flywheel to your engine. Plus every 100# you drop from your vehicle weight will decrease your 1/4 mile time by about 10th of a sec. JMO

luv4pits,
I agree with you 110% since I experienced it first hand
It blew my mind how much performance those 20's took away from me. The heavy flywheel analogy is a good one. An object in motion tends to stay in motion (loss in braking performance) and also accelleration is hard to achieve when you have that extra spinning weight to get moving.

I got the truck up to operating temp and I got out to where the road was nice and clean. I poured the coals to it in 1st and the *** end just spun and when the g-80 locked up it just drifted sideways, I hit 2nd gear and it swung over to he left and continued to burn. It was like someone gave me 30-40 HP. I was just amazed at how much performance putting those 20's on there took away from my takeoff and lowend. Although 20's look beautiful on a RCSB black truck, it takes away too much performance to justify putting them on IMHO. To each their own but I'm going to stay with stock from now on, if not lighter weight 16's
Now to get rid of those SS rims that are taking up so much space in my garage
And the moral of the story is, if you wanna go fast and not care about anything else, go with the smallest diameter and lightest weight wheel you can fit on your vehicle.

I had a similar experience. My 99 sierra had originally 235/75/16 goodyears and I wanted to lift the truck. (Don't ask!) Anyways, I put a set of 265/75/16 perilli's on and went from getting 18 mpg down to 13.5 mpg!! So after a while, I put the stock tires back on and WHAM!!!, truck acted like it had way more power!! I agree with most of what you say. Now on my 02, I had 255/70/16s and put a set of 255/65/16s on (1" smaller diameter) and the truck seemed to accelerate faster. I drove a 04 VHO with the 20's and 6.0 and wasn't impressed. The truck had 32" tires, just like the SS, had 3.73s and to me seemed slow!! It seems to me that anything over your factory 30" diameter tire will decrease performance.

Sports car show (import road racer) up here in Canada showed with larger Dia. lighter brake rotor's they lost 5hp on dyno. They said it was due to the weight mass being further from center even though they were lighter over all.
