Default Twin MAF's...GTO Ram-Air...how they work....

We've all seen this pic before:

And many of us wanted to know how they got two MAF's to work together.....Here's how:

When I was at SEMA I talked to the engineer in charge of the design of this car, I specifically asked him about the twin MAF's. He explained that to make it work they created another table in the PCM for a second MAF table, They then took the data coming from the each MAF and divided it in half, After dividing it in half they add the data from the two MAF's together to get actual air-flow to the engine......seems slightly harder than the way I would do it (I'd average the two signals) but since that 389cid motor makes 550hp it must work. He also said that they had tried a single MAF at the throttle body but that the turbulance was too great for the MAF to accurately read the incoming air and it had a bad tendancy to lean out at WOT

doesnt the GTO use a similar PCM as the rest of the lS1s, so if the added another table that just sounds really like a software change, maybe we could load out pcms with the same version but retune to for the truck motor.

Hey, I'm not quite sure I understand why they divide the signal in half. Wouldn't the signal from each maf tell the actual amount of air through that sensor. So, the total airflow to the engine would be the sum of those two sensors. Just wondering.

I THINK the new computers coming out will have significant software/hardware changes that will probably not allow a backward swap. Not sure when they're coming out but, probably in the next year or so.

I talked with an electronics company that was supposed to be putting together a "Dual MAF" averager box but, haven't heard from them in a long time.

When Ford made the V10 mustang test mule, it had 2 MAFs, but was basically two 5 cylinder engines put together with 2 of every sensor.. not sure which magazine that was in, but it was pretty sweet.
