Default Truck Steering Shaft?

Has anyone had any issues with a steering shaft cluncking sound/feel? I have a 2003 1500hd and i started to feel/hear some kind of cluncking from the steering wheel? I heard this was a comon thing and GM has re-designed the steering shaft. Any thought's? Thank-you.

you can either pack in grease which is a temporary fix or put the new design which is suppose to last longer. they had just come out with the new design when i last worked at a gm dealer so I don't know how long the new design holds up. I'm surprised that yours is an 03 and is just now noticeable. when i worked at the dealer they intermediate shaft would require lube every 6 months up to 2 years depending on where and how the vehicle is driven.

You probably do need the new steering shaft, but you may also need a new bearing that goes inside the steering column. Do a search on steering clunk there are a couple of threads about this stuff.

I think every truck built from 2001 to 2006 had that issue. I have had 4 trucks and 3 out of the 4 did it while I had it.

I just ordered one for $66, if it fixes the clunck, it will be well worth it.

+1 Had the new shaft installed for several months now and no sign of the clunking returning so far.

Mine does it. They have done a ton of stuff to the shaft and beef it up, still does it. My mom's 04 yukon does it and dads 03 duramax. Mom's is bad even with the new shaft. All this happens when in a turn like a parking space.

Is GM fixing this under a warrenty? It seems like they should! The dealer by me said that my truck wasn't on the recall list?
