Truck Problems
#1
Guys,
I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado Ext Cab 5.3. On the way home today, it stalled on me. I was able to start it again, but it idled rough. I managed to get it home, but whenever I stopped, it would stall and it was very hard to re-start. It was almost like it was starving for fuel. Sp, I assume either the pump or the filter. I have the filter, but not the pump. I have a few questions:
1. If I get a scanner, can I find out what code it is setting off? If so, where do I find out what that code means?
2. If it is the pump, how hard are they to change? I know that they are in the gas tank, is it hard to drop that and how much do they cost?
3. Any other suggestions?
The mods I have done to it are a Jet Chip, Jet Intake, Taylor wires, Bosch +4 plugs and a de=screened MAF. Thanks for your help.

1. Is your check engine light coming on? If not, you may not be setting any codes. But if you do get a code reader and find out it has set one, post it here and somebody will be able to tell you.
2. I personally have not done a fuel pump, but it may be easier to remove the bed and work on it from the top. I have no idea how much it would cost. When you change the filter, pull the fuel pump relay and run the truck out of gas, then change it while it is depressurized.
3. When you say hard to start, is it cranking fine and just not kicking on, or is it having a hard time cranking. The reason I ask is a bad positive connection can have these symtems. These A/C Delco batteries are famous for leaking at the positive terminal. Check those plugs. I have read many mixed reviews on those plugs you have.
Good Luck,

The best thing to do would be to check for loose/burnt plug wires first. Also, check the plugs and make sure they are all in good shape(no cracks, no messed up electrodes, etc..)
Then if you have access to a scanner such as Atap check for codes in the computer. If there is one set it would be alot easier to diagnose the problem. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> You might even do this first since it might show a particular cylinder misfiring alot. That way you could just check that cylinder.
I don't know about the fuel pumps. I haven't messed with it. I hear it's easier to get from the top if you unbolt the bed and get someone to help you move it back a little bit. There are only 6 bolts holding the bed on. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
There is a bunch of other stuff to check in the service manuals for this type of condition but, I would just start with the easiest stuff first.
Let us know what you find out. Haha...Greg beat me to it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

You guys are great. I am going to try to scan it, hopefully something will show. I am going to check the plugs and wires also. I just ran it right now, it ran fine in the driveway. Going to try to drive it.
Hey Fast 4.8, it cranked fine, just did not want to run. Hopefulley this helps.

IAC = Idle Air Control
It's basically a solenoid on the throttle body that opens/closes to let the right amount of air in to keep a certain idle speed.
If it's dirty or not working right it could definately be causing your problems.

I was thinking about taking the JetChip out right away. The only thing is that the truck is running OK right now. Anything that I do is shooting in the the dark. Also, I forgot to menttion ne thing, there is a whining noise coming from the fuel tank area. I know that there was always some noise, but it sems quite a bit louder now. I am going to start on it earyl this morning and probably work all through the weekend. Thank you guys for all your suggestions. Let me know if you think of anything else.
