Toughest Electric Cut-Outs?

I need some recommendations on this one....

I'm seeing a need for cut outs on the new KB 2.8 set up. I blew my passenger side exhaust open yesterday at a clamped section. It was a slip fit before yesterday.... now both sections are the same size :bomb: This was AFTER the cats.

So... I clearly need more exhaust flow to uncork this system. My thoughts are for a pair of 2.5 inch cut outs to install in front of my cats so I can open them when I want but still be quiet on the street. Who makes electric cut outs that won't melt or bend?

I've never had much luck with electric cut outs they always seem to leak after a few months,QTP makes them.

QTP + aluminum gaskets work pretty well, but if you're FI make sure they give you the steel geared version.

I've got a used one I'll be selling with the steel gears, but only have one.

Go with DMH. My QTP's fell apart, literally, in only two weeks, then charged me to fix their pieces of shit.

same here, but mine lasted almost 3 months. It leaked from day one. I could stop the leak, if I held the switch closed. When I told them about the issue, they said it was an improper installation. If the leak went away when I held the switch closed, how is that a bad install? A couple months later, the plate blew off when I was driving down the highway. I have several problems with there design. You couldn't pay me to put another one of those pieces of sh!t on my ride.

I'd recommend getting one from Keith McCord. It's cheaper than the others, but a better built unit. Instead of having barely enough room to get a nut on the bolts, this design has slots, so there is room for adjustment and an overall better fit.

Thanks for the feedback so far! Does Keith have a website?

Any more comments anyone?

yes, but he's not a sponsor. :secret:

DMH or the Dougs guillotine style will be the best bet.

dropkick13 04-22-2007 03:15 AM

so basically on my stock exhaust piping i would have a 3" cutout welded either right before the cat or right after and then McCords power plate welds to the cut out? is this cut out fine for this:

???
What would a shop probably charge for these welds?

i got mine from badlanze, works great.

it's because you installed it in the wrong way. i had that problem for a while until i figured it out.

The powerplate is secured to the cutout with nuts & bolts. A shop should weld the cutout in for about $20.

:bs: There are only 2 ways to install it. I tried both, and it leaked both times.

dropkick13 04-22-2007 11:05 AM

did the QTP get more expensive? looks like the Keith McCord and DMH's are better deals anyway. are there any other brands within the same price range?

in order to put the cut out in pre cats ill need two right? otherwise, if i only want to pay for one, where would the best place be to put it? what can i expect the difference to be sound wise of these different locations? in general, will my 5.3L sound pretty mean?

1slow01Z71 04-22-2007 02:02 PM

Itll sound like shit cause you basically have a stock truck, and where you are talking about putting them is asking for a burnt valve when you shut it down with the cutouts open since cool air will hit the exhaust valves quickly. I would put one right where your catback starts for best sound and performance, later if you get lt headers then put one on each collector.

dropkick13 04-22-2007 04:03 PM

will it sound mean/loud if i put one in post cat?

ZZebes 04-22-2007 04:11 PM

Without an Amftermarket cam and headers it isn't gonna sound to great

Start a thread asking about exhaust, this thread isnt the place.

ss64impala 04-23-2007 08:00 AM

single 3 inch cutout between y pipe and magnaflow

dropkick13 04-23-2007 08:48 AM

i think that sounds really good... do you have any other mods? any other clips of it reving/running?

Zick 04-24-2007 09:04 PM

These seem heavy duty. Instead of a butterfly, it has a sliding gate. I've seen one in person and they seem well built, but kind of big if you have clearance problems.

:stupid:
I've been told that "Doug's headers" electric cut-out is really good, have one on order but have no real world experience. Memeber on here recommended it.

silver-mod-o 04-25-2007 09:51 AM

another vote for Dougs... they are nice

Cuerva 04-26-2007 11:16 PM

I have an electric 3" cutout from Badlanzhpe.inc with remote control. It's worked really good. It can be opened from the switch or from the remote, one click and it opens or closes all the way (no overtorque problems). It can also be opened and stopped at any position.
