Thermostat Question
I'm debating getting a 160 t-stat for my truck and I'm not sure if I should or not. I've heard many different opinions about going with a 160, 180 or factory t-stat. I was told that it is not necessary to run anything but the factory t-stat and going to a cooler t-stat would cause problems and also that a cooler t-stat wouldn't make any difference from a performance stand point. On the other hand I've heard the total opposite. How many people here are running a cooler that factory t-stat, how many are still running the factory t-stat? Any dyno data showing hp gains going to a cooler t-stat?

I have had my 160 degree thermostat in for four days now and this is what I have to say on the subject. Ask yourself what kills most transmissions? Heat. I have a transmission temp gauge installed and my tranny runs 150 to 180 degrees with the new stat. Before it would run close to 200 degrees in this 90 degree heat. This is with the factory tans cooler. Engine temps have been between 175 to 180, instead of the 210 range. So to me the benefits are worth it. Will have to get to the dragstrip to see if there is any advantage performance wise, the timeslip will tell all.

Thank for the responses. I had a few people say that it wasn't good to put anything other than the factor t-stat because the engine is designed to operate at that temp. I tend to agree with lotzafun in that heat kills. In previous trucks I had 160 t-stat and think I'm gonna put one in my 05. Like Cammin03' said
I dont see how it couldnt help.. The engine is overall Cooler

The 160* stat allowed me to have my e-fans set to come on at a cooler temp, and I've noticed cooler trans temps with the cooler stat also. When the PCM is tuned for it, the cooler engine temps can definitely help performance IMO, by allowing you to run more timing before detonation occurs.

stock, a lower t stat will decrease your gas milage. these motors like to run warm for maximum economy.
if you are blower, or modded, i say go for it, even more so if you are getting a tune.

The 160* T-stat does have its benifits like everyone is saying.
Though what some do not understand is, why auto manufacturers use higher temp t-stats.
They use the higher t-stats to create more heat, which in turns helps lower the emissions and keep fuel economy optimal.
That reason may not concern too many of us. Though, this one might.
The other reason is to burn or "boil" out all of the moisture that builds up in an engine after sitting overnight or longer periods of time.
That is why it is good that your engine will warm up to 210*.
Boiling point of H2O is 208* right?
Just thought some of you might find it a little interesting.
I'm still going to install my 160* T-stat.
