BOTH! I Ran a 160* for a year and lost about 40 miles per tank full. It is a little better performance. But I'd rather have my milage back. If you have an aftermarket tune this may not be the case though. This is with a stock tune & A Diablosport tune. I think the mail order and dyno tunes take your temp into consideration and tune to suit.

personally i wouldnt go 160 for a DD. it will keep the truck in the closed loop and make it run rich. youll get worse gas mileage then you have gotten.

motors need to be warm

What about the 180* Thermo from Hypertech? I got one free with my tuner. Would a 180 be much different then the 160* in regards to Gas Mileage/performance???

i don't get it if you tune it to go into close loop then there is no problem and i'm thinking what you ment was open loop by the way.

Pretty sure that the PCM in these trucks from open loop to closed loop at around 137*, so that's not an issue. As for switching to a 160* stat w/o having the PCM tuned to accomodate, I don't have personal experience with this, but I had my PCM tuned for my efans and 160* stat at the same time and it made a nice difference performance-wise and I didn't experience any adverse affects in mpg (not that I'm one for calculating mpg, I just know how often I stop for gas and where I go etc. and it's been consistent).

its like 167* or 178* for the Gen III motor and its open or closed loop. if youre lower then that youre going ot run richer and run sluggish. no need to unless your a boosted truck or strickly 85+ degree weather area

what did they set your efans temps for do you know. i've read 170's is optimum for the ls1's. (from ls1tech and hpt forum's) and this is for 160 stats of course stock stat that would be useless.
