Ok I'm lost and confused reading all of these. I need a book of Muffler set up for dumbies! I'm not as knowledgible as you guys. All I want is the best of both worlds. My SSS has a 6.0 and I can't decide which one to get. I really want a deep sound, then loud, but most importantly, HP,HP,HP. The like the sound of the flow 40, but they don't have the HP as others. I read lot about magnaflow, and hear that its not loud enough. All I want is a single in/single out muffler, but can't seem to choose. I don't want to much flow, because I'm not going mod to much except for a tune and CAI. I read that some guys are losing low end TQ because of to much flow though the muffler. I don't want that to happen. I'm like most guys, I only want to this once. So who has the best one?

What about a borla?

WHAT ABOUT THE FLOWMASTER 10 series racing muffler? run those. Thats a straight though flowmaster with somewhat the same sound.

i've got a radix, mid lenght headers and single 3" magnaflow cat back [single t/pipe]and to me its
perfect. it has a smooth deep sound, but not too loud. the resonace that was there when it was new is gone.
I think in theory if you reduce b/pressure with a blower you may loose alittle boost, but i'm not positive about that. change the exhaust to get the sound you want and then change to pulley if needed.
imho

Well, I just replaced my 2 Flowmaster 40's with my DI/DO Magnaflow (part 12599) and have it turned down before the axle.

I havent driven it much, but I can tell you itis MUCH quieter... no more raspy sound.. I can actually hear the Radix whining now.. lol. I noticed the low end response is a little better now. I went WOT a couple of times, and didnt notice a HUGE difference, but it feels like it pulls a little harder.... but the low end is definetely better.

Just the sound difference alone was worth ditching the ratty sounding flowmasters. The Magnaflow 12599 is a HUGE muffler... anyone looking to have a loud exhaust will not like it.. its pretty tame... but I like it though

Congrats on your new purchase. I hope you enjoy it.

Please let us know if you hear a loud resonance while cruising down the freeway. That's been my main concern from the start and caused me to hesitate buying the Magnaflow 12599 for my 6.0L. I couldn't get a clear cut answer from anyone.

I just learned about a company called Aero. I checked out their website and discovered that they offer mufflers made from T-304 stainless versus the T-409 Magnaflow uses. Two mufflers caught my eye. The Stealth (PN 248) and the Turbine XL. The latter has a built in resonator. They aren't cheap but appear to be constructed well. One customer used two (!?!) Turbine XL's on his '03 6.0L. There's also a dyno chart for an '03 8.1L indicating a 40+ lb.ft. increase over stock below 2500 rpm. Pretty impressive if it's true. Even if it boosted torque by half that I'd be satisfied. They describe their mufflers as having a smooth, lower-than-stock tone.

I sent them an email asking for more detailed information. If they reply, I'll post it here.

I beleive magnaflow mufflers are 304 and their pipes are 409. my 2 year old muffler is shiny and the pipes look like 5 year old oe

Usually, if a company uses T-304 they'll reveal it because it's a higher grade of stainless and a selling point. If it's T-409 (like most OEM stainless exhaust pipes) chances are it won't be bragged about. I know that a magnet will stick to a Magnaflow stainless muffler because I've seen it first-hand. (which may be why T-409 is also classified as 'ferritic') Because of that, I concluded that it wasn't made of T-304. (doesn't mean I'm right though)

Steel becomes 'stainless' when chromium and nickel are added. The more nickle is added, the less magnetic it becomes. A magnet won't stick to T-304. But don't trust what I say. Here are a couple links which explain it better;

I'm not saying that Magnaflow mufflers are junk, just that they are most likely not made from T-304.

But a muffler shop I visited recently tried to steer me away from Magnaflow by claiming that their stainless mufflers would rust at the ends, near the inlet/outlet pipes. Then he tried to steer me to Flo-Pros so maybe he had some sort of ulterior motive.

Buyer definitely beware...

Well so far so good. The resonance is hardly noticable, but maybe its because I was so used to the loud *** flowmasters ... lol. Also, at highway speeds I dont hear much resonance... but remember, I have 4.10's, and they keep the RPM's up enough at 70-75mph that it keeps it above the normal resonance area. If I cruise at 50-55, theres a slight bit of resonance. All in all, its VERY quiet. In fact, when I get on it, I barely hear the exhaust.. mostly just the Radix screaming away. Its actually louder cruising around, then when WOT... because when under boost the radix overpowers the exhaust (which is fine by me!)

To sum it up... if you are looking for a quiet high flowing DI/DO 3" exhaust, the Magnaflow 12599 is a good choice.

If you are looking for a head turning loud exhaust.. do NOT buy this muffler. Its VERY tame. Buy a Corsa Sport instead, those sound the best.

Thanks for the feedback. It helps when you're dealing with a known quantity.

My truck has 4.10's too and at 60 - 65 mph with the slightly larger-than stock tires, the engine is hovering around 2000 rpm. I cruise at this speed around the metro area for two reasons; Speed limits plus my truck gets the best mileage at this speed.

Besides being quieter than the Flowmasters, have you noticed any SOTP performance gains?

Thanks.

Nick
