Starting a new engine
#1
I've been lurking here for a long time, but I finally have a question. I'm wanting to swap in a 6.0 for my 4.8 and I was wondering what are the steps involved in starting a new engine. I've swapped Gen I small blocks, but not one of these new engines.
There isn't a distributor, so how do you prime the oil pump? Or do you have to? Can you just crank it and hope it gets oil pressure?
Are there any other steps involved in this swap besides just replacing the engine, plugging it all in and filling it with oil?

I dont know how to prime the oil pump
but I would at least turn it over a few times by hand
to check for piston to valve clearance
if youve been inside it
and possibly unhook the coils and spin it with the starter
a few times
maybe someone else will chime in

I would do the same as above. Just unhook the coil and pump relay and spin it over a couple of times. this will get the oil to the top and then plug everything in a listen and watch carefully for a bit.

Yep, that's the best advice ( pulls FP relay and disconnect coil packs ). Just be sure to turn it over in short bursts, like 5 seconds at a time. This will keep the starter from burning up.
You should see some pressure building within 4-5 cycles and you're safe to light it up!

This is also why I love this site! Best one around, regardless of what you drive...
