this is common with the lq4 since they are mated up with the 4l80.. i havent heard of this with a lq9 thought because most are with 4l65e... On the lq4 there is a spacer on the crank that needs to be removed for it to work right..

i was sold this motor under the impression that it was an 03 escalade motor, i.e. an lq9. the back of my motor looks like this....

Thats an lq4 with the long crank.. you may have to try and make some kind of spacer or something.. Do you have the 317 heads??

Here is mine..

yeah i have the 317 heads thats why i didnt question weither it was truly a lq9. my 4.8 looks like yours in that pic you posted. i that post i referenced it said that the motor was a 99/00. so that motor would have had a different starter than the newer lq4/lq9, right? how could i tell for sure weither i have a lq4/lq9 without removing the heads? and i already have the motor in the truck and the trans bolted up.

are you sure that the spacer on the back isnt removable??? my lq4 is a 01 and it had the shorter crank.. not sure why a 03 would have the long one.. Its not the starter that is your problem, it is the longer crank..

if i were u i would try and get a bore scope and see if you have a flat top motor (lq9) not a dish piston (lq4).then i would get a starter to fit and make sure that their is no problem with the clutch clearence.
