i would love to get a set of lt's but i know it aint gonna fly come time to smog. which is absolutely the stupidest thing ever, why does it matter if the exhaust goes through individual tubes to a collector or through a cast iron brick, if anything i would think that lt's would make for a more eficient/cleaner exhaust anyway... end rant

Do it and pay $300 to have it "smogged". or just switch your manifolds and cats, smog it, and put the LTs back on. Shorties arent worth the money or hassle.

Here's why; take a look at the distance the Catalytic converters are on your truck from where the #7 and #8 primaries mold into the manifold flange. It's a pretty short distance, correct? Long Tube headers do not merge the primaries together typically until around the bell-housing/trans pan area. This puts the cats to far back in the exhaust stream to "light-off" quickly enough to meet California Emissions requirements. GM did this to rid them selves of having to install Secondary A.I.R. systems on California emissions trucks (which were installed on 1999-2002 California trucks).

This emissions control device injected fresh air into the exhaust manifolds which in turn helped to bring the Cat up to temp more quickly by providing oxygen for the un-burnt fuel to burn with. This reaction helped to bring the Cat up to proper temp so that it could take over with it's catalyst properties. Hence why the AIR pump only runs for the first two minutes or so upon fire up when engine coolant temperature conditions are met. This was all required because these early Gen III V8 trucks had cats farther back in the exhaust stream, and as such heat was lost before the cat, not lighting it off quick enough. Long Tube headers let out more heat from the system than does a stock cast iron manifold, thus causing a greater issue.

Over all I agree with you, if it blows clean under the test conditions and doesn't smoke, give that damn thing a tag and get it out of the smog shop!

smog it and then buy the long tubes. keep your old exhaust. two years later put your old one back on and smog it. It's pretty easy to put the stock stuff back on. The diff between LTs and catless exhaust vs emission crap is night and day
