Default Scary moment with brake system.....

I just lifted mt 2002 Yukon (6" with 35" nitto muds) and changed the gears to 4.56.....I haven't gotten tuning yet, so my ABS and brake lights come on when I drive the car - last night I was braking hard on an uneven surface and the brake system kinda stopped working for a few seconds.....

Was this a fluke that will be fixed with tuning (which will take away the lights that pop up)? Is it becasue the ABS system was disabled from the confusion of the new gears? I hope this never happens again as my truck rolled for a good 10-15 feet with little braking power....please share your ideas....

On top of the loss of ABS, do you think that your tire choice would have affected your traction?

My idea is you're flirting with disaster driving it like it is without upgrading your brakes and tuning for the gear change.

My 01 chevy with stock wheels does it and has from day one. It happend when I was bringing it home new and I brought it back gm checked it out a said nothing wrong.
It happens when I hit a bump and I am braking hard. The peddal just goes soft and the truck keeps going. I nearly rear ended a car a couple of weeks ago. I hit a pot hole and boom brakes just did not work worth a D$%M. I have never had the abs light come on. Pads, brakes and fluid all fine.
I think there is a design flaw in the abs sessor b/c my cousin in college station had a 02 gmc and it did it too. It was only when he had hit the brakes as he hit the bumps same as mine. I think it thinks it is skidding and the abs comes on and since the wheels are bouncing it over powers the abs pump system and the brake go almost dead.
It has to be a sharp bump though and ussually pretty hard

WOW...this is crazy.....have you tried talking to anyone at GM about this??? It seems like a huge problem that can be very dangerous....now I'm scared to drive this thing!

General Motors Corp. faces a U.S. safety investigation of 1.28 million Silverado pickups, Yukon SUVs and similar light trucks because of corrosion on a brake part that led to a recall in Canada.

The action involves 1999 through 2002 models, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday. It affects vehicles sold in states where salt often is used to keep roads clear in winter and may corrode a speed sensor, interfering with braking, the agency said. NHTSA reported 120 complaints, including 22 accidents and four injuries.

GM recalled 150,000 of the trucks last year in eastern Canada. Company spokesman Alan Adler said Detroit-based GM decided then not to recall the vehicles in the United States because it believed the corrosion was occurring in just three of every 10,000 of the trucks in states where road salt is often used. The rate in Canada was more than 10 times higher, he said.

I have an 04 and it does the same thing. If you are on the brakes hard and hit a bump they let up for a split moment. I did not notice it until I put the shackles on. Dealer said they could find nothing wrong.

It's normal! ABS at work keeping your tires from breaking lose in that situation. You're tire weight is going to multiply this effect. As mentioned before, I'd seriously consider doing a big break upgrade.

My 04's brakes go soft too when going over bumps and hitting breaks. When mine happens is does the knocking or popping sound of the pulses. It's just the ABS like METAL MAN said. There is definitely no salt being used in Houston.
