replacing U-joints
#1
i am having the launch shutter again. this happened 2 years ago too and it was the rear drive shafts both front and rear u-joints. i had the dealer fix it then. since i will always be owning a truck, i'd figure i should learn how to replace them myself. i never done this job before. what does it entail?

I haven't done any U-Joints on a NBS truck yet, but I imagine it's similiar to the older cars I've worked on. About the only hitch you may run into is breaking loose the epoxy which may secure the caps. I heard a propane touch comes in handy here. Next time I ever do one, I'm going to invest in a U-Joint press. That should also do the job on the epoxy and save you from buggering up the yolk trying to hammer the caps in and out. U-Joint replacement should be covered in any manual you pick up.
If you need further help, let me know and I can walk you through it.

i have a haynes manual. it pretty much went through everything that i have to do. i think mine has the c-clips instead of the epoxy, if i think i know what you are talking about.
instead of a press, i probably will use a large vice and sockets.
do you have to take the slip yoke out of the tranny?

Well, no clips on my caps. A vice and socket should do the trick. I forgot all about that trick since I've never had access to a vice when I really needed it.
Yep, the slip yoke will slid right out the tranny when you pull on the driveshaft after undoing it from the rear differential. You may loose a little bit of tranny fluid. I'm not sure about the transfer case side. I'd have to refer to the manual to see if it's secured in anyway (I saw a rubber bootie there...).

Mine was easy to take out. It fell out in the Driveway one day. Was cleanning the Truck and went to back it back into the Garage. I heard a clank from the rear so, I shut the truck off. Looked under, My damn driveshaft was sitting on the ground. The Clips that held it in had been ripped off some how. But I had some one press in the new u-joint and slide it back in.
