Default Replacing the oil pan on a '97 K1500. Help!

Hey Everyone.

Not sure if anyone has had this issue with their truck, but i got my truck as a hand-me down from my dad. It has 276k on it, and its seen better days. Spent alot of time on a construction site, and doing other nasty work.

That being said, ive been having an issue with the oil pan. It seemed as if the oil pan was leaking. There were no holes, but after id wipe the pan clean, it would get all oily just on the bottom of the pan and drip a bit. There was no oil anywhere else on the motor.

So, i brought the motor into school, and we put it on the lifted, dropped the Front diff (Alot easier then lifting the motor!) and got the pan off.

Well, i had assumed/hoped that the truck would use a generic '86 - 99 pan as does every other 1pc GM motor. But of course GM wanted to cause me problems and used a different friggen pan

Its got a, for lack of a better word, dent to clear the oil cooler, which the other pan i bought doesnt have. And it looks like the windage tray stops sooner then the one i have. The pan i have is about .5" deeper at the front then the truck pan.

Im looking for some opinions, the pan i have cost me $30. The pan specific to this truck is $200CAD. Would the other pan work if i fit it in? Does the side of the pan really need to have that much clearance for the oil cooler? And would the extra .5" of depth up front make a difference?

Id really like to get this truck back together asap. Its been at school for a month between getting a new fuel filler neck, ball joints, brakes, and the oil pan.

Thanks in advance for help!

Sheldon

I don’t see how your old oil pan would be the problem, unless it clearly had a hole in it. Just make sure the lip where the gaskets go is good and straight. Beat every bolt hole flat with a ball peen hammer. Your problem might be your rear main seal. I could see if it was leaking oil would just roll down the back of the pan where you can see it and make just the bottom of the pan all oily. Hope that helps

edit: I guess it could also be your drain plug. If that's all stripped out then I guess you would need a new pan.

Thanks for your input!

When i got the pan off, everything was clean except for the bottom of the pan. The bolt was tight and everything. We sanded the bottom off and found a few pin-holes, so i think i can safely say its toast.

That being said, i was looking at the wrong PN's for the $200 pan, and the proper pan (4 qt) is only $85 with my discount!

Ill order one tommorow AM and hopefully get the truck back together before the end of the day.
