I've had mine installed backwards by the "professional" engine builder many years back. It only ran on like 4 cylinders, belched fuel and smoke, and wouldn't rev over like 1200, tach also didn't work. It was not driveable in any way shape or form. It also threw a crank sensor code. I had them switch it around and it ran fine and tach worked too. I doubt this is your issue.

Do a search of engine build pics and you'll see the reluctor wheel in some. I compared some photos I found online to ones of my build to determine the reluctor wheel was on backwards.

well i hope you are right because i dont want to pull the crank. it runs on all 8 but pops and misfires above 2k. tach works just fine. im going to check to see if the sensor is to close and check my cam timing this weekend.

finally had a chance to mess with the truck today. drove it for 35 miles. it seems that 99% of the time she pops and misses past 1/4 throttle but every once in a while she pulls like a raped ape.

i am down to either the stock pump just isnt enough or my original set of coils have gone weak. any thoughts?

its a long shot but i had similar symptoms just to find out it was the cam, it was on a new build the cam was defective , is your cam new? used or what? i remember at part throttle it would back fire sputter at around same rpm range.

Its a brand new comp cam. What was wrong with your cam? Im no longer getting any codes. I drove it this morning and I could climb all the way to 4500 before any sputter then it was back down around 2500. Its weird that it varies where in the rpm that I have issues.
