Default Rear Main Seal - fact vs fiction

2002 SCSB Silverado 5.3. I am replacing the rear main seal, rear cover gasket, and the oil pan gasket. I've watched dozens of U tube videos and read hundreds of threads. It is confusing as most of the comments are "I heard the seal has been re designed and you don't need the alignment tool". But I haven't seen anyone say the KNOW something.

In my mind, if replacing the rear cover gasket it seems you would have to:
-use the alignment tool to put the rear cover on (even if the seal is redesigned).
-OR put the seal into the cover, then install the rear cover while the oil pan is OFF. (to keep the pan from pushing up and causing a misalignment)

Does anyone know what the proper process is? I don't want to pull the tranny twice.

Thanks for any comments.

Proper process is to use the alignment tool with the pan off, however it is possible but usually a pain to leave the pan on and replace the rear main, as its tight against the pan and makes getting the seal aligned without tearing it a real pita!!!
