questions on 99 Z71 rear end gears/diff
#1
I have a 99 Z71 with the stock rear end and gears. I put on a chrome diff cover and noticed that my spider gears in the differential (i have no idea how)are all tore up and probably wont last much longer. I have a few questions about what to get.
-what is the stock gear ratio that come in the z71's? i think 3.73, correct?
-what are the ring/pinion gear sizes?
-does any one have the eaton posi unit? if so, are you satisfied with it? any other recommendations, or where to buy?
-Since my truck is 4WD, if i decide to go with a bigger gear, like a 4.10, ill have to change the front diff gears also, which i have never done one like this before. how difficult is it to install the front gears ? is it basically the same as setting up the rear?
Thanks for the help

Is your gears making any noise? Was there any metal on teh magnet in the cover? Yes, you can get 4.10's and yes you will have to replace teh fornts also. Make sure you dont have 4.10's already. You can get them as a option.....gotta check your glove box for the RPO codes. Never done an install, so I cant really tell you how to.
P.S. How do you like that cam with your lifted truck?

thanks for the replies guys. my truck has the 3.73, non-locker diff. The rear wasnt making any noise or anything, which i dont think it would unless the ring and pinion were bad, but they looked great. its just the spider gears inside the differential that are really worn and chipped. i wish i knew why, but im not the orig. owner, so who knows what happened. there was a lot of shavings on the magnet when i took the cover off. the dude at summit said that it may have the 8.6" ring gear..has anyone ever heard of this?
About the cam, I love it...its not too big where i lost a lot of low end power, but its a lot peppier with a little lope, too. with the 6.0 i would probably go a little bigger though.
