Default Question about harmonic balancer and timing chain cover?

I just installed a rebuilt 305 in my 87 1/2 ton pickup.I reused the old timing chain cover and bought a new harmonic balancer. When I got the new balancer it was smaller then the old one, on the old 305. I double checked with 2 parts store and they both show the smaller balancer being the correct one. I took them the old one and they said it was for a 350 only but how if the old motor is a 305? Anyways my problem is the old timing chain cover tap deal to read the timing is further away from the new balancer then it was on the old balancer and the line to read the timing is in another spot. Is this going to be a problem reading the timing on the engine? A

you need to get a bolt on timing tab, for the balancer you have. The big one is for your 305, and the small one is for the 350...
