Default problem while starting

i'm having problems when i start my truck up. the rpm gauge will fluctuate a little bit like almost wanting to die but then it goes back to normal after like maybe 20 seconds. it does this everytime. no matter how long my truck has been on, if i turn off the engine and immediately turn it back on it will do the same thing. has anyone had a problem like this?

i heard someone a year after they bought their truck it did this but the engine would actually die unless they pressed on the gas a bit. turned out to be the battery.

also i have been having problems with my ABS LIGHT and some other light coming on (not sure which). however they keep turning on but i'll restart the engine and they turn off. what is causing this problem? thanks for the help.............

I had a problem similiar to your in my old truck. Also a 1999, it turned out to be a bad battery ground. Check it out and let me know what happens!

Definattly check the battery cables. Might find the positive terminal leaking.

For the first problem, you could try cleaning your throttle body after checking your battery ground. The passages and IAC may be gummed up with carbon.

As far as the ABS goes, it could be a number of things. The system is picking up a fault while driving, but when you cycle the key off, it does it's checks and is OK, until the problem re-occurs. You're going to have to get a code out of it too see which area the problem lies.

well went to autozone and had the battery checked and it was still good. i tried to tighten the terminals but nothing was loose. i have not tried cleaning out the throttle body. is there anything else that could be wrong? Alternator going bad maybe? i am trying to hold off on taking it to the dealership but will if i need to.

Might want to pull the vacuum hose off of the fuel pressure regulator and check for fuel (middle of driver's side fuel rail). If gas is in that line, the fp reg is leaking and should be replaced. This will usually give you more of a hot soak hard start, but you never know.
