Default please help with 04' plans

Well after almost two years of convencing people to buy Chevy's I must have listened to myself one too many times. A 04' Avalance followed me home the other day. I would like to get some significant performance gains without going overboard. This will be my first gen III motor to mess with. Here are my goals and uses of the truck.
- daily driver so gas milage is important
- would like to stick with 87 octane if possible
- do not want to affect towing ability at all so converter is out of the question.
- don't want to effect reliability of the truck. I have other cars for all out performance
- cam change is a consideration if the above is still possible

The bottm line this this rides and drives like a dream but its big and heavy and I want a lot more go when I need it to. It still needs to tow my car hauler with a 3400lb. Malibu on it.

Thanks in advance on any shared opinions.
