Piston slap...
#1
There was an awful lot of talk not that long ago about problems with GM and piston slaps. I didn't follow it closely enough, so what actually ended up being the final result with the classs action lawsuits and so forth?
Reason I ask, is I have a motor (6.0 in a 2500HD)with the noisy pistons. Being that I'm seriously thinking about a Radix and some other mods, I'm worried about the pistons. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they determine that the noise was caused by improperly sized pistons? I know GM claims that the noise is normal and there's nothing to worry about. I don't know how much I believe that...
I've got 60K hard miles on my motor and it's never skipped a beat. But those miles are all stock. Should I consider replacing the pistons before I add anything to the truck?

Mine did it before I put the blower on at 20,000 miles, and after two years of having the blower, it's about the same, maybe a little worse, but I took pretty good care of my motor as far as not pushing the knock retard and high rpm's.
I took the blower off a few months ago, and is back to stock.
My GF's 02 Subaru has worse piston slap thanmy truck, and they have the same answer as GM, they all do it, and it's normal :\

That issue "was" suppose to be resolved in the 03 Trucks. I can notice the knock occasionally on my truck. But on my 01 man it was terrible you can really notice it. There wasnt really any legal matters like GM gettin sued or anything like it was just resolved in the 03 trucks.
As far as superchargin' it I never heard of any issues of anyone upgrading their pistons because of the piston slap. But it wouldnt hurt upgrading the stock pistons in case you go with some more power.

my 99 has 130k miles and the ONLY time i can hear it is if i put it in gear right after i start it cold in the morning. even then, it goes away in like 15 seconds.
most people say it's louder with mobil 1. mine actually got quieter when i switched. (mobil 1 10w30)

Why would it be louder with Mobil 1? Up until recently, I never put anything in my truck other than Mobil 1. Gee, maybe that's why I always thought mine was so loud... Nah, can't be. I recently switched to Amsoil and there's no difference.
I spent a lot of time at the dealer over this in the first year or two I owned the truck. I even had a lot of converstaions with someone at GM about it too. The end result was always the same old song... It's normal.
I'm actually wondering if it might make more sense to trade my truck in and take advantage of the employee discounts that are being offered. My truck has been problem free, but I really am worried about problems once I go with a Radix.
I can get a new SLT truck with payments around $350/month vs. the $570/month I'm paying now for an SLE (only 8 more payments to go though).

I'd say at least 2/3 of the people with LS based trucks that I have talked to, have it with their trucks. Not sure about 04's or 05's. Probably the same though

My 5.3 slapped so bad when I put the supercharger on I thought it was knock retard. When I put the scanner up to it there was no KR but just slapping. I eventually blew the rings on #7 on the 5.3. When I upgraded to the 6.0 litre it ran like a charm. 10k so far and no slapping.
