Default open element air cleaner -- Yes or No ?

I have a 93 GMC with a stock 350 (throttle body).
I have left the air cleaner stock, because I believe what the aftermarket keeps calling a "cold air system" is actually just the opposite

it's just a cone shaped aircleaner on a tube that draws HOT AIR from the engine compartment.
At least my stock aircleaner as restrictive as it may be, is drawing it's air from outside the engine compartment.

I have always been wanting to fabricate something less restrictive than the stock set up, but still drawing air from outside but never got around to it

This past weekend I put on a Goodmark Cowl Hood (in prep for new paint job)
Anyway, I got to thinking since I should now be getting much more cool outside air from the cowl maybe just a regular Old school 14" open element air cleaner might be benifitial ????

What do you think

Depends, I am somewhat familiar with what those engine bays look like. Any pictures of what you are thinking about running??
