I run Mobil 1 also but change at oil and filter at 5000. Been using it since about 7K. At over 180K, Blackstone Labs tells me my engine shows wear more like it has 30K on it instead of 180K. It still burns no oil and that experience is good enough for me to continue using it regardless if I am wasting my money.

I have run the Royal Purple for some time now.I at first ran the Mobil1 syn. and then i changed to RP.Goin from mobil1 to RP made a differance. You can feel that it has a little more get up and go over the Mobil1.
Plus the stuff protects extremely well.
Between Royal Purple and Amosoil(sp) i won't use anything else.

Go with the synthetic for sure. Make up for the extra cost by extending your oil change intervals. The new Mobil 1 is good for 15,000 miles. I wouldn't stretch it that far but 10,000 is a safe number. This is in addition to reduced sludging tendency, reduced friction which means better mileage, longer engine life, etc. The synthetic oils were developed for use in jet engines. Pretty extreme conditions when you consider the temperatures that a gas turbine operates at.

I use synthetic and change it when the oil life monitor tells me to (way more than 3K probably closer to 6K). I've used Mobil 1 and RP. As I understand it, the main advantage to synthetic is that it does not break down and lose viscocity or lubricity, it just gets dirty after a while. Not sure what might make one brand better than another.

im in the same boat right now. I dont wanna use the cheapy pennzoil 10w-30 that carspa sells. I can get Mobil1 synthetic from them for 60 bux. I might just go RP though, i've heard a lot of good things about RP. as for amsoil, i'll never use one of their filters again, in my last truck the filter element just disintegrated and after 1500 miles the oil was pretty black. the motor ran fine and never overheated during that 1500.
synthetic is definately the way to go, but im just a poor college student
