NGK Plug Differences?

Default NGK Plug Differences?

I'm getting ready to put new spark plugs in my truck, and I'm wondering about the differences between the TR55 and the TR5's? Everyone told me to get the TR55's on my car, so I did, but now with the truck I can't really find them anymore, and whenever I search plugs for my truck specifically anywhere only the TR5's come up, and not the TR55's. On Summit they have the exact same picture, price, and specs. What's different about them? I picked up some TR5's the other day at Advance, but I can take them back if there really is an important difference.

One other thing. The guy at advance told me with a truck nearing 100k miles (92k right now) that I should get at least a platinum plug. I've never heard that before, so I went ahead and got the TR5's, but I want to ask about that too before I put them in. Why would he say that about the platinum, and is it true?

I'm not sure of the difference between a TR55 and a TR5, or if the 5 supercedes the 55, but I know that a TR6 is a colder plug than a TR55. As for the platinum issue, the tool at Advance is blowing smoke up your ****. There's no reason to switch to platinum on a high mileage engine. The deal with platinum is that it lasts longer than copper, and Iridium lasts longer than platinum. There might be some slight burn characteristics between the 3, but I'm sure it's minimal. FWIW, I've had the factory platinums, Denso Iridiums, and NGK TR55's in my truck, and it's run the same with all 3, and visual inspection of the plugs showed them all to be burning the same

If you don't want to change your plugs that often, then go for the platinum or iridium, but if you're like the rest of us and spend alot of time under the hood messing with stuff anyway, then save the bucks on some copper NGK's. Whatever you do, stick with Delco, NGK, or Denso. The others out there (the platinum x3 and Bosch etc.) don't seem to work as well, especially in GM GENIII motors

Thanks for all the info . I was going to say.... I had never heard of the platinum thing.... lol. I'm just going to stick with the TR5's I have now then. Somebody on another forum from my local car club told me the only difference between the TR5 and TR55 is the preset gap being .039 vs .059, but I'm gapping them anyway, so that shouldn't matter. I do like messing around under my hood too, so it wouldn't be a bad thing to have something to do again in a while . How long should I expect the copper plugs to last then?

Copper plugs are usually good for 15 to 25k, depending on how the engine's tuned, gas quality, etc. I'd check em again at 15k. We used to replace the copper plugs on most vehicles as part of a 30K service.

FWIW, platinum plugs are usually advertised as 60 to 100k, and iridium is usually 100k+. Toyota recommends running their iridiums for 120k

Haha, ok, thanks a lot guys. I guess they are going in tomorrow after the seafoaming/K&N cleaning .
