yeah it is for emissions, ford has a similar deal with their dual tip on the diesels, i do not know if dodge is doing the same thing!
I heard that if you try to take it off your voiding warranty on your engine!

It is for the filter on the new diesels that heats really hot to clean itself. The tip is suposed to draw in outside air to help cool the exhaust. Suposedly without the exhaust tip like that the exhaust is so hot when the filter cleans itself it will burn the paint off the car next to you at a stop light.

The 07.5 diesels go into regen to burn the junk out of the particulate filter in the exhaust.

Yes the exhaust can reach temps of 1400 degrees when in the re-gen cycle. Ford and GM both use that as you say "intercooled" exhaust tips, dodge does not, I don't recall on the top of my head what they do to help cool exhaust.

i am wondering if it is possible to remove the filter and change the exhaust system on the diesels now without messing up the computer?
I heard on the brand new dodge diesels, they will void your warranty if you try to run purple(for canadian farmers-don't know if the yanks have purple), due to it not meeting the ultra low sulfur diesel requirements!
I think the days of diesel power are coming to an abrupt end!

dont cuss this tip. its so you dont burn your leg off. the exhaust can get up to 1100 degrees. there is a procedure with the tech 2 to burn the **** out of the filter where it gets the exhaust temp to 1800 for 30 min.

I am gonna steal one
