Default Nelson Tune

I have been looking into getting one of these. Right now I have a Hypertech. Does it really make a noticeable difference over the hypertech. I also think the nelson tune would help with my cam. If I removed the hypertech and got the nelson tune do you guys think I would feel a noticeable difference?

Everyone that has had the HP3 says it is a vast improvement and he can also really tweak that cam. So yes, most people think the nelson tune and stall are the best bang for the buck performance and just fun driving things you can do.

Yes, there is no doubt going with a tune from Nelson or PrescribedPower is way better than anything the HP3 does, however... the 5.3's are not as detuned like the 6.0 and 8.1's, and as far as making it better with "your" cam.. in your signature it says LS1 camshaft, which one? starting in 2000 GM used the same cam in everything most showed up in 2001 and newer models, wether it was a ls1,4.8,5.3,or 6.0 and it's still that way. my point is, if your running a stock ls1 camshaft, don't get your hopes up. now a ls6 cam is definitely worth some extra power...

Well the cam came out of a 2002 camaro. I heard that the cam in the 99's is the worst one they put in the 5.3s, so it helped a bit. See here is my dilema...I have some money to spend and I'm looking to make my truck faster and fun to drive on the street. I'm not really looking to put it in the 11's or anything. I have been debating on the nelson tune or going from a 3.42 to a 3.73 gear ratio. What do you guys think is the best noticeable difference?

In my opinion a 3.42 to a 3.73 is a waste of time. A 4.10 LS might be a good improvement but the difference between a 3.42 and 3.73 is fairly small. A better cam might give some good improvement, especially with a custom tune. I personally like my nelson tune, but I think it will really pay off after more mods like big cam and injectors. If anything, you could always spray. I hear its a lot of fun to play with.

I agree going from a 3:42 to a 3:73 isn't really worth it in a truck, 4:10's are a decent change, alot of it has to do with your tire size.

i sold my 20's. then i went to 285/50/18's with 3.90's and i love them. i8 can still get a good kick down with a good highway run to. there are people running good without gears. if it were me i would do a shift kit and servo's along with a nelson tune and 90% to 100% tqm removed.

Go bigger on the cam too. Alot of people are going bigger now and it seems like a good cam to get would be the 218-222 cam. I recco something with hi lift as it will make more power. If you want a good lope go with a 112-113. Then get the Transgo, w/billet servo's, 100% tq mgt removed and a 91-93 octane Nelson tune. Also get the 3000 stall with that cam. Depending on how much money you have to spend though. The stall will be a good improvement but isn't all that needed with a 02 ls1 cam. It certainly won't hurt thats for sure.
