Default Need Help W/ Exhaust

Can anyone give me a little advice. Im new, I have a 2007 Silverado LT, and Im lookin for an awesome exhaust system - headers and all. Im thinkin I want to go 3'' true dual all the way, JBA headers and flowmaster for exhaust. Does that sound like a good set-up.

mmmmmm....not really what i would go with, dont really need dual 3" unless you are doing FI, maybe go with somethin like 2.25" or 2.5". i would do a magnaflow over a flowmaster bc of the drone factor. also i would do full length headers, not shorties, which in JBA are gonna cost a pretty penny. you might check into the pacesetter long tube headers which will save you some money over the JBA's.

Agreed, if you are set on 3", just go a single 3" in/out all the way back. And I would personally stay as far away from flowmaster as possible. Magnaflow, hooker, corsa, well pretty much anything but flowmaster will net better performance results, unless you are just going for loud. Longubes will net better results and like said about pacesetters, they are much cheaper than the JBA's

Dual 3 inch is way to much for a small block. If it is a 4.8, then I would go with dual 2.25. If it is a 5.3 I would go either a 2.5 inch true dual, or the 2.25 dual setup.

I have heard a lot of people say that you actually flow better with a single 3 inch. Goes against my old school thought, but the explanation of why makes sense.

Good Luck.

I know on my 04 that I just traded in, the 3" single netter better results than dual 2.5" on the 5.3

I'm with all these guys on the fact of "you don't need duals". Also...why are you set on JBA headers? If you look, the JBA headers DO NOT make any more power than Pacesetter, Hooker, Heddman and so on. So why would you want to pay the high dollar price for JBA's when you can buy the same power increase with Pacesetters?

Default Ok, no duals

This forum rocks!

So 53bowtie - what do you mean by FI?

Im also wondering why single 3'' instead of dual? Would it cause my engine to run too lean? I plan to do more modifications. I want to build up my truck and post it here on the site.

2006 8.1- you said it goes agsinst what you thought but the explanation makes sense. What explanation are you thinking of.

I really appreciate all of the replies, you all got me motivated as hell.

By the way, its a 5.3

FI stands for forced induction. i have run true 2.5 duals on my old 4.8 and i am now running a 3.5" single with a straight through dynomax on my 5.3. I feel like the single exhaust on a stock motor pulls the strongest throughout the whole power band. just my 2 cents.

I personally run a single 3" through an areo turbine muffler and dumped up and over the rear axle and i love it. I use to have dual 2.25" exhaust with 2 flowmaster 40 series and i can honestly say at any rpm i have much better response with the single 3" setup. And yes as stated above FI means Forced Induction (turbo, supercharger) = only time you would need to run duals bigger than 2.5" on a 5.3 motor. Also this might help you out as to the question of a single 3" instead of duals.

AS POSTED BY LITREDDEVIL:
Just covering some of the basics of exhaust sytems:
To start we all know that increasing pipe size increases power ... to a point. If your car has single exhaust it is well worth investing in dual exhuast, even a poor system can increase mileage by 20% or more.
With a few exceptions, small blocks like 2" up tp 2-1/4" depending on cubic inches and the level of mods done to the engine.
Big blocks generally like 2.5". What is overlooked is how much 1/4" increases the area of the pipe.

2" is 3.14 square inches
2 1/4 is 3.98 " "
2 1/2 is 4.91 " "
3" is is 7.07 " "

You can see going from 2.5" to 3" increases the pipe size by over 40%. This is very important as will be discuss later.
