Default Need help real fast please..

ok im tryin to install my digital dakota fan controller..and i have to have it runnin tonight..stupid me thought it would be easy but you know how it goes...i need to know where the water sending unit is...it says to tap into the coolant temp line that runs to the gauge...could someone please tell me where this is? there is a spot on the unit that says sender.. i tried to run power to it from the junction box thinkin it would simulate the temp gauge so i could just get it up and runnin for now and just use the a/c compressor to run the fans but that does nothing..then i grounded the wire and put power to it at the same time and it sparked and started smokin..why did it do this? but if someone could help me out with the coolant temp wire it would help alot....thanks

Coolant temp sender is on the drivers side head right where the valve cover meets the head.
