compress springs, remove locks, remove retainer, remove spring, remove seal, remove seat

reverse

install seat, install seal, install spring, install retainer, compress spring, install locks, release spring

Save yourself some headache and get a good LS specific valve spring tool if you are doing them on the vehicle. The generic jaw type compressors don't work very well on double springs.

+1, the Crane tool is the way to go for sure.

As mentioned, don't try and shortcut or skip any steps...if you try to reuse your current seals and seats you will run into problems.

Yes the right size socket works great, I've been installing valve seals on engines for years using a socket and have never boogered one up yet. Can't remember off the top of my head at the moment what size works well though.

Just by feel you'll know once they are all the way on and bottomed out.
