Default Mileage difference between 2WD and 4WD?

Still truck shopping. Yes, I know what the window stickers say, but I want some real replies from owners...

How much does MPG suffer when driving a 2WD truck vs a 4WD truck? Not driving in 4WD mode of course, just highway cruising.

I really don't have much use for a 4x4, but I like the way they look better and hold their resale a bit better around Texas.

I've always looked at it like this; If I cared that much about MPG, I wouldn't get a V8 full size truck.

The 4x4 does hold resale better like you said and has a better stance (IMO) once you make the thing sit level

MPG between the two should be close enough that it depends on what you really want more.

Like a prev poster stated, I get 15mpg around town in my 00 Z71 ext cab 5.3l w/3.73 gears. I'm pretty heavy on the pedal too.

My '99 reg-cab shortbed Z71 5.3L w/3.73 always got 13mpg, no matter how I drove it (so, it was on the floor alot). That was with 285/75/16 tires and a 3" body lift. With the stock tires & height, I think it got around 15.

I easily get 15 MPG normally. Thats with 285/75/16s. Getting the oversized tires cut the mileage down some, but opening the exhaust gained mileage, so it was a trade off.

My 2001 Extended Cab Z-71 with 5.3 and 3.73 get 12 - 13 no matter how I drive the darned thing. It's my first 4X4 and the mileage really has me bummed. My previous truck was a 96 Extended Cab 5.0 with pulleys, exhaust, K&N, Power Programmed and 160 thermostat. The Z would lose badly if they were ever lined up. He11, I'm afraid my wife would run off and hide from the Z in her 2000 5.9 Durango!

Since the mileage couldn't get much worse anyway, many mods are on the drawing board (pulleys, Ultimate PD, Power Programmer, already got the Delta Flow 50)

I average 15-16 MPG in town, depending on how I drive it. 2WD

RANDYZ71, if you haven't done it, at least get a new muffler. I had a Flowmaster 40 put on and saw an immediate 10% increase in gas mileage. I have since changed to a Borla muffler because the Flow was too loud in the cab. Then I put a body lift on and saw an immediate 10% loss in mileage.

I'll send you my old flowmaster for a dirt cheap price if you want it.

i have a fully loaded Z71 extended cab with 33's and i get about 16 mpg on the freeway with the tailgate up, maybe a tad better with it down.

I havent got anything worse than 15mpg, even combined with around town driving

i also have intake/exhaust/hpp3
