Ls swap 2 door 4wd -2wd conversion??
#1
It's been a while since I've been on this site, I've sold all my 2 doors and finally now have a line on a 95 tbi 4x4 for really cheap. The body is pretty good rust wise but the transmission and rear end are toast. I've got a buddy with a rear end for cheap so that leaves the transmission as being the main hurdle in this adventure.
Sooo the obvious move is to upgrade to the 4l80e since I've had nothing but issues with the 4l60e's. If I can find a 5.3 or 6.0 for the right price and pair it with the 4l80e I would want to ditch the transfer case and all the other excess parts to make it a 2wd. I have a good 4x4 truck already and the 2 door 2wds are pretty unheard of around here. Id really like to simplify the system and make it a true 2wd since there is alot less components to worry about in the future when I hope to turbo it. What issues am I going to run into doing all of this mayhem. I'm a journeyman welder btw so any custom cross braces or cutting is not a big deal to me. Any advice, forum links or help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard 2dooryukon,
I had a 2dr 2wd for 5 years, loved it and miss it very much. In the years I had it, this topic came up quite a bit. In the end, the same result. Find a 2wd.
I am also a weldor by trade and took everyone's advise in finding a 2wd. 4wd 2drs were a dime a dozen in MA and practically given away. I had seen them for as little as $500 for a complete vehicle. I searched far and wide to find a 2dr 2wd finally scoring one 1200 miles away. I took a 2400 mile road trip bought it and drove it home sight unseen.
Well worth the trip and patience in searching for one.
If I remember correctly, not one component is compatible from the back of the trans to the front of the front diff. including control arms and mounts from a 2wd to a 4wd.
What about converting it to AWD? That would be bad ***. Find a wrecked Denali and swap everything over.

I'll see if I can find some info. Go through the link above, its full of everything you'd want to know about 2drs, 2 and 4wd.

Essentially all you have to do is Remove the transfer case, front diff, front axles, swap out a trans for a 2wd unit. You will need a new rear drive shaft though.
I am not sure on those front hub bearings on those models but you may need to leave the stub part of the axle in to hold the wheel bearing together.

Thanks for the help guys, I think I'm gonna hold out for a 2wd, might have to come down to the states to find one but at least its less likely to have rust. I discovered some rust on the 4wd I was looking to buy so It pretty much defeates the purpose of putting all that work to make it a 2wd. I've read up on the conversion alot and it sounds like alot more work then it's worth. I hope I can post up a new project sooner than later, all of these LS swaps have me fired up to do one myself.
