Default LQ9 timing chain sprocket rubbing?

Anybody heard of this? Loosened the pan to replace oil pump and was greeted with shavings. Looks like crank walks backwards and the crank timing gear sprocket is contacting the front main/block.

LQ9 all stock internals 120k.

Bypass plunger was stuck in oil pump so I feel confident the replacement pump will fix the issue, just curious what could be causing the rub?

Also as soon as I realized it wasn't the oil sender and it started to tick I shut it down and had it towed home.

Thanks in advance!

You can always pull the oil pan and check out the thrust bearings. if they are shot the crank will walk forward and back under load.

Thanks for your reply

Pulled the pan and the 'shavings' I thought were coming from the front cover were actually chunks of main bearing
