Default LQ4 LQ9? Differences? Which Vehicles?

I'm about to start looking in slavage yards for the engine to use as the foundation for my build-up. I'm still pretty green so I don't know if I have my facts straight but I "think" that the only difference between the two engines is the cr with the lq9 being higher as the result of flat top pistons. Right? Same block and heads etc?

If this is the case then it won't matter which one I buy (pistons/heads will be changed anyway) or what vehicle the engine comes from but if the lq9 is superior in some other way that makes it preferable over the lq4 then I'll need to be searching for an engine based on brand and body style of truck/suv, as opposed to just searching for a 6.0. What vehicles offered the lq9? Are both iron blocks or was there a alum block offered?

Thanks, Jim

both same block & heads the lq9 has flattop pistons & slightly better connecting rods, from what i've read on here the only vehicals that got the lq9 were the SS/VHO & escalade EXT, i've heard some people say some of the newwer denalis as well but im not sure on that one

Thanks! I had that link saved and forgot I had it! That article really helps ... and would be even more helpful if my old fart brain could remember what I read. After age 50 the brain starts growing teflon and before long nuttin sticks.... everthing just slides right off.
