Default just bought a 2001 Sierra

need a truck to tow the race cars around & back. anything w/ better gas mileage than the old suburban w/ 502cid backed by built turbo 400 trans.

my 2001 Sierra has the little 4.8L vortec but it has decent gas mileage(KEY Point), I'm use to older cars ya know the ones that are emission exempt, so i want mods that increase gas mileage but won't put a check engine light on since i will have to deal w/ emissions right now just thinking about basics.

1. hypertech programmer
2. K&N intake
3. mandrel bent exhaust 3in perhaps?
4. emission legal headers ¿brand?

any more ideas or better brands let me know

Welcome to the board! And a fellow upside down question mark user! LOL What about this one ---> ¡See! lol {:-Þ

Anyway...

Just get a catback made for more power, stock from Y to muff is like 2.75" piping. 3" mandrel is better but not a whole lot on a stock type motor.

FIPK is good too, all air intakes do about the same thing. UPD is popular and that Voilant (sp?).

HPP3s don't do a lot for power. A custom tune is where it's at. I have one from Nelson Performance but lots use Westers and some Ed Wright. Or you can tune it yourself. It's really up to you. People have gone from HPP3s, to Predators, then to custom tunes STILL gaining power/performance.

There are a few sets of sniffer legal headers. The Other Guys and that Supermaxx setup are the ones I can think of...shorty headers are just tubular manifolds. Since you're in Texas all we have is that simple ODBII test for '96+ vehicles. As long as stuff is intact I have no problem passing, you can even get away w/ being catless if the inspectors don't look under your truck.

Electric fans are a good upgrade too.

Lastly a mild cam is good for some good gains. Most use a 212/218 from Comp cams...stock powerband from what I understand just more of it.

nelson performance is located in Texas, a tune from him will be better then the HPP3 for power AND fuel milage

Corsa has a sweet sounding exhaust, kinda expensive though

nelson is in san antonia. pm farmtruk he can get you the info. He is the one that owns that place. his name is Allen. I would just put a weld in muffler for 125 or so if you want to just get the exhaust. it will give you really the same gains. everyone on here loves magnaflow. also headers would really help.
