My buddy has a 1995 Sierra with a 305TBI and whenever he accelerates from a stop the motor makes backfiring sound and dies when he gets over 2000rpms, when he is moving and gets past 2000 it makes a backfiring noise constantly

what the hell is going on

Have you looked at the coil??? what have you done or checked!!!

cat is almost brand new factory replacement about 5000 miles ago

dist. is almost brand new
i'll check the coil later

check all the ignition as is was gm's finest for ignition problems...could be out of time...pull the spout connector and check the timing should be set at 0 or 10..should say there by the radiator

there is a sensor on the throttle body thats making it do this. i do not remember which one it was. I had this same problem on a 4.3 about 10 years ago and i just swapped throttle bodys and that took care of it.

i have a friend that had a prob like that, egr valve was sticking,replaced and fixed everything

I believe it out of time terribly....or.....it's the Throttle Position Sensor on the TB. Check his timing though...first....because it sounds evactly like it's jumped time something terrible.
