But the LQ4 and LQ9 blocks are identical......how would the casting number tell anything? I doubt that the factory that casts the blocks knows which is going to be which.

 

You can tell if it's LQ9 rods or LQ4 rods with the pan off if you know what to look for. Here are some pics showing the difference. LQ9 is on the left.

I have the LQ9 rods for sure by looking at the pics. I will have to print the rest of the pics off and take them home with me after work. I should be able to tell by the underside of the piston skirt design if it's an LQ9 piston or not. Thanks a ton 67SS509, these pics are exactly what I was looking for. It'll be my luck it's got LQ9 Rods but LQ4 pistons. I'll be tickled if it's an LQ9 as I won't be shopping for 243 heads anymore

 

If you have LQ9 rods I'm gonna bet you have LQ9 pistons. Let us know what it turns out to be.......

Well, I went home last night to compare. I most definatly have the heavy duty Lq9 connecting rods, however after comparing those first set of pictures it appears as though it's an LQ4 with HD rods. I took a phillips screwdriver gently through the sparkplug hole and went to the cyl wall, then drug it across the top of the piston. About 1/4" inch away from the wall I felt the screwdriver dip. I'm almost positive they're dished. I did this a few times and got the same result everytime. Interesting that this motor would have the HD dimpled rods but lower compression. Anyways, for anyone who is going junkyarding with a 5/8" spark plug socket and flashlight, good luck telling if your motor is a LQ4 or LQ9. You need a LONG phillips screwdriver as well

 

I agree...the heads have the same casting number and they are identical, so why would the block casting number vary?

Lol this thread is almost 7 years old. As for your question, did the escalade have a 60e or 80e. You will need to know for flywheel/crank snout length changes. The short of the answer is yes with some minor adjustments.
