how long should a fuel pump last?

Great, it's 91* w/humidity to match, & I gotta check since I haven't been under in awhile/ can't remember. And for my own curiousity.
Agreed 100%.

eh, just wait until the evening then crawl under there on the driver's side. It'll take you all of 10 seconds to realize if you have a fuel filter you can easily service or not.

I don't know why GM took the inline fuel filter off in 04. It's cheap insurance. The fuel helps keep your fuel pump cool which extends the life of the pump so don't let your tank get empty.

Keep the one on the rail. The filter in the tank is just to keep bigger chunks from damaging the pump on the pre '04. The filter on the rail is a lower micron and designed to keep smaller bits from clogging up the injectors AFAIK.
