Amsoil is rated at 25k miles, with a filter change half way through. The problem keeping it in longer, from what I have read, is not a oil problem, it's a filtration problem. Amsoil and Mobil 1 have the two best rated filters out there, so if you did go longer interval, I would definitely use their filter.

Engine wear is caused by dirt particles larger than 5 microns. Amsoil makes a bypass oil filter (special mounting in conjunction with normal filter)that filters down to less than 1 micron. Using their system, theoretically, you could run your oil forever, as long as filters are changed at the right interval. They have a S-10 that has run over 450,000 miles on the same oil. Of course, you have to periodically send samples in to be tested for viscosity break down.

I run 5W30 in the rides.

Also 90% of those miles are freeway ones...normal oil temps and constant cruise. I was under the impression oil goes bad when it cools and gets dirty that way by moisture and other particles in the oil. It's rare the vehicle does stop+go in the city, even then if I do I'm in and out within 15min tops so the oil temp stays up.

So it looks like from that link Flyer threw up here that I'm fine running it like how I am with filter changes @ 5K and adding a qt. I won't run it for more that 20K but when I drained it at 10K with the 5K filter+qt change all seemed well.

Now for my 2 cent's.Ive worked in quick lube industry for 13yrs,and have seen it all.As far as going 10k on a oil change to each his own.i have customers who just stop in to have us change the filter at 5 k,and they have put well over 100k no problems. The thing that concerns me is, all the metal on the drainplug magnet when they go 10k on oil change. It's at least 4 times as much as normal. I run mobil 1 and change it evry 2k oil and oil filter but hey its free.

I don't seem to have much metal shavings on my drain plug when I change my oil. Today I changed the filter and added a qt (plus the usual bit more to get the level up due to blowby) let it run ... prefill the filter to avoid cold start knock or dry bearings!

Drove it around the block and let it sit, then checked the oil.

It was full and the color of the oil was as if I had changed it within 2000 miles... dunno what to think about that one.

Your fine with running Mobil 1 up to 20,000 miles.I change the Dmax's Delvac 1 at 10,000 miles with a filter swap and top up at 5,000 miles.Normally I'm 1-2 qts down and with a new filter I'm putting 3 qts of fresh oil in it.I do the same thing with my 6.0 liter cargo van, though it is normally only half a qt low at 5,000 miles. The Z06's oil will be changes every 2,000 miles.

Amsoil change intervals vary depending on the product you are using. For gasoline engines,

XL - series: 7500 miles or 6 months.

A - series: 25000 miles or 1 year ;with SDF filter change filter at 12500 miles or 6 months; with other filters change filter according to vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.

2000 - series: 35000 miles or 1 year; same filter change recommendations.

I have read that it is recommended to do an used oil analysis if you are using extended drain intervals because oil breakdown can cause severe engine wear or breakdown.

I decided to use Amsoil 10W30 ATM for now and change it using the GM engine oil monitoring system. If I bother to have an analysis done and all is well I might extend the interval after the warranty is up. I do not want to get caught in the middle with GM saying it is an oil problem and Amsoil saying that it is not.

I use good ole' Penzoil 10-40 in every vehicle i've ever had. Change oil and filter every 3-4k. I've never had any problems from any of them. My 90' GMC with a 350 had 226k on it with the oil and filter every 10k miles. Only thing ever changed on it was a PCV at 220k. The trans was never touched.

I'm sure mobil 1 is better, but i for one am stickin with my tried and true.
