Thanks for the info everyone!

Curious to know more about the "lean cruise" mode. Is this just optimizing cruise around 91 octane?

It's suppose to lean out your A/F ratio while under light throttle during cruising, like on a highway.

The ideal A/F mixture is 14.7:1. This is 14.7 parts of air to one part of fuel. This is where all of the fuel is completely burned away. Also known as Stoichiometric (it's easier to just say stoic).

Under part throttle/cruising situations, it's more efficient for your car to run at Stoich. When under power, you'll actually want to run a little more rich to make power.

you might see a milage increase if you can keep your foot of the go pedal and keep the truck away from the track

Get a tune from Allen Nelson and you will be glad you did.

What advantage does Nelson have over the others (westers/pcmforless/wait4me)? I like the idea of the inexpensive tune for the obvious reason ($).... IF the guy doing the tuning knows what he's doing. On the other hand I don't want to save money and then get stuck with an inferior product, if that's the case. (If I did I would have bought a Dodge )

So far I have heard the same basic praise about each company. It'd be great to get a PCM from each for a single truck and go take them all to the track and dyno, but I don't think anyone has done anything remotely close.

The idea of paying $500 for a tune seems like an awful lot to me though. It seems like the wrong price-point from both the business and consumer perspectives, i.e., I think the tuners themselves might make more money if they charged less. I say this under the belief that there is not a whole lot of "per vehicle" work that goes into selling mail-order custom tunes.

In any case, my tune should be pretty darn simple, i.e., "it's a 100% stock ECSB 4WD w/ the 5.3L, with the only real mod being the Magnaflow catback I'm going to buy in a couple of months" The next mod after that will be, in the event that business goes REALLY well, a Radix, and in that case I'm having the sucker dynotuned...forget mail-order.

i went through the whole nelson tune fiasco last year.allen did three different tunes for my 04 5.3 ec4wd,total bogus results.first i was told 25 HP and 30 FTLBS,then after the first tune sucked *** i was told i would be a"nice improvement"no numbers.
second tune i was told to"give it more time to learn".so i put it in right before i drove from new york to virginia, lost 2 MPG and the truck was no faster, only improvement was the top speed limiter was bumped up.
last tune as soon as i put it in the shift point were stock RPM and the top speed limiter was stock.
this whole experience friggin blew ***,worst money i have ever spent on an"improvement".this ended up costing me UPS charges three times and about 10 long distance phone calls.
must be you have to be from texas to get a good tune from allen.
oh yea i also put a trans go shift kit in and was told to put two washers in the 1-2 servo now with out the "tune"my tranny feels like its going to come through the floor on the 1-2 shift.
i have talked to brian at PCM for less and he has a good sales pitch

,but after all this crap im a bit gunshy of ****** with this any more.
i will say allen did refund my inital cost of 500.00 but i ate the time, calls, and UPS charges.

As I mentioned above, I will be going for a dyno tune. Has anyone tried this route or are the majority of the people on the board going for mail order tunes? Just curious.... I have seen some impressive comments and "less than desired" comments .
