Got the gears and the Whine too
Ok i put my gears in last thurday and have had no problems but i really could live without the whining im gettin now. the gears are US Gear. 3.73s with an eaton limited carrier. someone told me that US Gears are about the quietest out there and its just because the gears are "straight cut" instead of whatever the factory uses. Any truth to this or would a set of GM Factory 373s be quieter? The whine isnt loud at all and can only be heard rolling down the road with the radio off and truck in neutral to quiet the exaust. im open for suggetstions even the ones that say your lucky with just a little whine. thanks Justin

Yeah i had the assistance of 25 years of drag racing and mechanics. my boss helped me out with the install, depth gauge and patterning. also with the shimming. thats kinda what i wanted to know, that OEM 373s would be more quiet.

Re: Got the gears and the Whine too
I was told by a guy that's been dragging and building trannies and rear ends for 20 years that 90% of gear whine is caused by setup. He said that I wouldn't have a problem with Richmond's whining, which I heard I would, but I bought some Precision gears instead and am waiting on my Eaton to come in.

parish, the eaton diff is absolutely awesome. not once since the install have i had the "one wheel wonder" thing happen. i had an eaton in my dodge ss/t for 2 years and never had any problems with it. i would recomend it to anyone highly. i paid $364 for the carrier which is the best price i could find around the louisiana area. To me it is by far superior to the stock GM limited set up and that much better than the open diff i had b4.

cool, i can't wait! i ordered one from toms diferential, $292. with bearings, gasket, lube, addative, marking compound and shiping it was $390. i don't know if it will shave any ET since i launch in 4wd but it should make it alot more fun and hopefuly make it so i don't have to leave it in auto4wd all the time. it also should reduce the load on the front diferential wich i assume is the weak link in my drivline.

Re: Got the gears and the Whine too
Gear set-up IS the key to noiseless operation. I have US Gear 4.10's with no accell or decell whine. Mark @ AAP replaced the crush sleeve with a solid shimmed collar for my application and set the lash. I'm hard on the gears but they are still quite as day one. I have run 3.73 GM gears and 3.42 Precisions in my Imapala...neither were noisey.
Set-up is the key.

Re: Got the gears and the Whine too
crazy, i got all my parts from Zimmer Gears on south choctaw in Baton Rouge. the eaton was 364 gears were right at 200 and bearing kit was 65. Make sure you talk to earl zimmer. the only problem i had was that he sent me a bearing kit for a older model chevy with the small carrier bearings. make it clear that your axle. "1999 and up" have the big bearings. the numbers for the bearings are LM 603049 and the race number is LM603012.I may have those backwards but just make sure your bearing kit has those number bearings and races in it. well i installed my gears myself with the help of my boss. this was my first install and it went perfect. 2 hours and i was done. all it takes is the right parts and it can be done with no problems. If your not up to the install yourself, i recomend either Zimmer gears in baton rouge or L&S Automotive in Port Allen. i didnt price zimmer but i was quoted $200 for the install at L&S. per you bring the parts. if you have any questions just ask i love helping out anyone i can.
